A Christmas Present from The Octopus Project!

From their mailing list:

Hello folks!

Our first foray as a band began back in 1999 with a Christmas release of sorts, and we thought we’d continue that tradition with a special little release for all of you. As a Christmas gift to you fine folks, we would like to give you our cover of the Bee Gees song, “I.O.I.O.” (complete with bonus verse at the end!). This version features Josh, Yvonne, and Toto (respectively) all taking vocal duties. We recorded it in our practice space and even snuck into a giant stairwell at the University of Texas to get some insane reverb. Needless-to-say it was a blast to make, and we hope you all enjoy it!

Much more importantly, have a fantastic holiday season!

You can download the song here.

Join the fight for a resonable IP Czar!

Kevin Donovan just sent out the following message to the freeculture.org mailing-list,

Hey all,

As you know, the PRO-IP act created the position of IP Enforcement Representative (czar) and Obama has the ability to appoint someone to the position. The IP Czar will be the government’s front man on patent, trademark and copyright - working on treaties, advising Congress and the President, etc.

It is incredibly important that someone reasonable is appointed. We know that the RIAA and their ilk are pushing hard for their choices.

We need to speak up and show that we care.

I’ve created a Facebook cause (http://tinyurl.com/77xo7j) supporting a reasonable IP Czar choice. It has links to other causes for individuals you want to support (Lessig, Sohn, Varian and everyone’s favorite, Mary Bono).

Let’s have some fun with this, but more importantly, make some noise. Use you contacts, harass your friends, blog/tweet/dent/picket. If you have ways to get it on the liberal blogs, do so, etc.

Here’s the cause: http://tinyurl.com/77xo7j

We really have a chance to be heard, let’s do it.

Everyone should join up!

Lessing on Copyright Reform

In another spoken-word-esque powerpoint, Lessig explains the importance of copyright reform. It’s an awesome talk, too bad, though, that he hasn’t talked to Tufte

Do What You Like

Finding someone else’s old records in your house can provide a window into a world of music that, no matter how far off or bizzare it may seem, ususally ends up simply being stuff you just haven’t heard yet. It’s not a particularly new phenomenon, and probably one I play up in my head even more because vinyl as medium has taken on a slightly mystic dimension, that somehow any old record is going to have some long lost gem of music squirreled away in its grooves, a product most likely of me watching other people dig successfully for a long time, while I’ve only bought around100+ records in my entire life. So that when I find something like Blind Faith’s self-titled LP, look at the titleless cover art (above) and think it’s some bizarre hick freakout record, I discover perhaps a day later it’s a completely well known, major British 1969 release from Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Steve Winwood that came at a particular peak in all thier careers. And it was one of my dad’s favorite records from back in the hazy drug days. Cool, but not exactly digging in the crates mysticalia.  Song link after the jump.

Bobmo

So I needed to take a break from what has turned out to be one of the most ridiculous exam periods ever. What is getting me through? None other that the prolific Bobmo. Hailing from Paris, via Bordeaux he has been producing tracks since 2005. Oh yeah and did I mention he is only 17? With a healthy mix of all the essentials–House, Electro, and Bmore he has been dominating the french scene. Here is a good sampling of his stuff, as well as some bonus Kazey & Bulldog. None of this stuff is terribly new except for the remix he just did of Scenario Rock. All worth checking out though. <3 bmore club made in europe y’all.

Somebody lurks in the shadows

Turns out this time it was DatA

Give me a since-summer late pass on this one, but I got a hold of the “Kim & Jessie” single the other day and it has a great, 80s electro-synth anxietyfest DatA remix on it. Not his absolute best, but I’ll take as many of these as I can get.
