[show] Cerebral Ballzy, Ottobar, March 13th

Cerebral Ballzy’s a great, rough-around-the-edges New York think guitared rock band that fits in nicely at the Ottobar. Listening to them makes me want to run in a circle with Thomas Hintze (although who knows if he’d want to do the same… :sigh:). They’re playing with a Team Robspierre, a band that I know at least Ziegs really digs. You can listen to a sample song of Cerebral Baltzy here.

The Beatles Complete on Ukelele

Amazing, amazing project! via bOINGbOING,

The “Beatles Complete on Ukulele” is an ambitious and awesome blog. They’ve posted three MP3s of Beatles songs so far. Here’s Fiona Silver doing “Run for Your Life.”

200902101639Run For Your Life is the final song on The Beatle’s creative breakthrough album, 1965’s Rubber Soul. They put it last for very good reasons.

While not the worst Beatle song it might be the worst one written and sung by John.

Consider the unfortunate first line.

“I’d rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man.”

Happily, the culture has come a long way baby since 1965.

From Ukulelia:

The Beatles Complete On Ukulele is a web based project by Roger Greenawalt and David Barratt where they willA) Record & perform on ukulele all 185 original compositions by The Beatles with 185 guest singers/artists.

B) Write essays to coincide with each release.

C) Make available for download one new recording and essay every Tuesday for 185 weeks, beginning January 20, 2009 (Inauguration Day) and climaxing July 24, 2012 (The eve of the London Olympics).”

Buffet’s recording is actually song three of 185. The first two are that old ukulele chestnut While My Guitar Gently Weeps, performed by Dandelion Wine, and Oh Darling, sung by Kathena Bryant of The Hippynuts.

Do What You Like

Finding someone else’s old records in your house can provide a window into a world of music that, no matter how far off or bizzare it may seem, ususally ends up simply being stuff you just haven’t heard yet. It’s not a particularly new phenomenon, and probably one I play up in my head even more because vinyl as medium has taken on a slightly mystic dimension, that somehow any old record is going to have some long lost gem of music squirreled away in its grooves, a product most likely of me watching other people dig successfully for a long time, while I’ve only bought around100+ records in my entire life. So that when I find something like Blind Faith’s self-titled LP, look at the titleless cover art (above) and think it’s some bizarre hick freakout record, I discover perhaps a day later it’s a completely well known, major British 1969 release from Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Steve Winwood that came at a particular peak in all thier careers. And it was one of my dad’s favorite records from back in the hazy drug days. Cool, but not exactly digging in the crates mysticalia.  Song link after the jump.
